From 1917 to 1984, the factory of Henry Ford & Sons was the industrial hub of Cork City, manufacturing motor vehicles on the banks of the River Lee as one of Cork’s largest employers.
An important cultural landmark that has lain dormant and deteriorirating for decades, Rebel City Distillery has chosen this historic space for its home, drawing on the innovations of the past to inspire the creations of the future.

Meet Robert Barrett, a seasoned bio-chemist turned distinguished fine spirits expert, boasting over a decade of mastery in the craft of creating and distilling exceptional spirits. Armed with an esteemed MSc in Brewing & Distilling from Edinburgh’s prestigious Heriot-Watt University, which boasts a remarkable roster of industry stalwarts among its alumni, Robert’s journey led him to refine his skills at renowned distilleries and beverage establishments throughout Ireland and Canada. His passion for crafting premium spirits has led him to the forefront of the industry, where he continues to create extraordinary libations with unwavering dedication and expertise.

– The Founders
In 2020, Robert Barrett, alongside his wife Bhagya and father Brendan, utilized their combined industry expertise to establish their very own exclusive distillery. Originally from Kerala, India, Bhagya brings a wealth of knowledge as an IT Program Manager, having worked in bustling cities such as Chennai and Madrid before settling in Ireland in 2013. With an MBA in Project Management and a deep appreciation for her cultural heritage, Bhagya’s unique perspective serves as the driving force behind the distinct flavors and character of Maharani Gin.
Meanwhile, Brendan, with his successful background in engineering and construction, mentored Robert in business development and oversaw the meticulous refurbishment and redevelopment of the distillery building. Together, this talented trio has united their diverse skills and passions to create an extraordinary distillery experience that harmoniously combines innovation, culture, and craftsmanship.
